The Rise and Fall of Hotel Monte Palace
Perched atop the verdant caldera of Sete Cidades on São Miguel Island, Azores, Portugal, Hotel Monte Palace stands as a symbol of ambition and abandonment. This once luxurious five-star hotel, now a skeletal structure, reflects a story of grandeur dreams and unfulfilled potential.

It was here, overlooking the Sete Cidades caldera with its twin crater lakes, that the idea for Hotel Monte Palace was conceived. With 88 rooms, including a presidential suite, four luxury suites, and additional standard and junior suites, the hotel was designed to offer the utmost in comfort and elegance. It featured two restaurants – “Grill Dona Amélia” and “Restaurante D. Carlos” – named in honor of Portuguese kings, a nod to the region’s royal past. The hotel also boasted a nightclub, a bar, three conference rooms, game rooms, a bank, tobacco shop, boutiques, and more.
A Short-Lived Dream
Despite its grandeur and being named Portugal’s best hotel in 1990, Hotel Monte Palace failed to attract enough guests. The hotel’s remote location, coupled with the Azores’ unpredictable weather, posed significant challenges. With limited activities beyond enjoying the scenic view, the hotel struggled to appeal to the upscale tourist market. After just 19 months of operation, the hotel closed its doors in 1991.
Abandonment and Decay
After its closure, Hotel Monte Palace remained in limbo, guarded but gradually succumbing to vandalism and theft. By 2011, security guards had left, and the hotel was stripped of its valuables, including furniture and marble fixtures. The once-grand hotel transformed into a site of ruin, covered in graffiti, with nature reclaiming its space.
The Future: Uncertainty and Hope
In 2017, a Chinese hotel firm, Level Constellation, acquired Hotel Monte Palace with plans to refurbish and reopen it as a luxury hotel in 2021. However, as of 2023, the hotel remains abandoned, its future uncertain. Despite various theories and plans for its revival, Hotel Monte Palace continues to be an enigmatic presence in Sete Cidades, attracting visitors and urban explorers drawn to its eerie beauty and lost potential.
