A Military Retreat in the Yugoslav Era
Post-World War II, the Grand Hotel transitioned into a military retreat under the Yugoslav People’s Army. By the 1960s and 70s, the area evolved into an expansive resort complex, including additional hotels like Hotel Goričina I, Hotel Pelegrin, and Hotel Kupari. Accommodating up to 4,500 guests, it became a secluded haven for military personnel and their families. Notably, Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito had a private villa within the complex, further elevating Kupari’s prestige.
A Turning Point: Destruction During the Croatian War
The Croatian War of Independence in the early 1990s brought Kupari’s glory days to a devastating end. In 1991, the Yugoslav People’s Army, in a tragic twist of fate, bombarded and torched the resort.
