The Origins and Construction of Slains Castle

Slains Castle, also known as New Slains Castle to distinguish it from the nearby Old Slains Castle, was constructed around an existing tower house in 1597 by the 9th Earl of Erroll​​​​. The castle underwent significant reconstruction several times, with the most notable one occurring in 1836-1837 under the 18th Earl of Erroll, William Hay. Slains Castle has been a part of Scotland’s history for centuries. Notably, the older castle, which was a family seat of the Errolls, was destroyed by James VI in 1597 as a punishment for their part in a plot against him​​.
