Nestled on the southbound side of Highway 11 in Oro-Medonte Township, just north of Barrie, Ontario, the Shanty Bay Go-Karts was once a hub of thrilling activity. This now-abandoned go-kart track, a popular summer destination for decades, now stands as a silent testament to its past glories and current state of neglect.
A Thriving Past
The Shanty Bay Go-Karts, with its one-kilometer-long track, was more than just a place for racing; it was a community spot for fun and gathering. In its heyday, the venue offered not just go-karting, but also mini-golf, and a party room for birthdays and other events. It was a place where families and friends could spend hours of entertainment, racing in single and double rider karts, or enjoying a round of mini-golf.
The Unseen Decline
Despite its popularity, the Shanty Bay Go-Karts faced a sudden decline. The COVID-19 pandemic, referred to as the CCP Virus in some reports, posed significant challenges. The track, along with its mini-golf counterpart, remained closed for the 2020 operating season due to restrictions. The owner, Nabil Samuel, decided not to open for the 2021 season either, even with the easing of restrictions.
As time passed, nature began reclaiming the site. Weeds started overwhelming the mini-golf course, and the race track, though still in reasonable condition, became obscured by overgrowth. The 10.5-acre property, which also included a disused gas station and spaces formerly occupied by a Coffee Time outlet and a McDonald’s restaurant, was eventually put up for sale (Military Bruce).
Present State and Urban Exploration
Today, the Shanty Bay Go-Karts is a shadow of its former self. The whole property is very overgrown, with the mini-putt course appearing neglected for years. The putting greens are torn up, and the concrete obstacles are crumbling. While the track itself is in fairly good condition, it shows signs of age. The site has become a point of interest for urban explorers and photographers, drawn to its eerie and dilapidated state (AbandonedExploring).
The future of this once-popular entertainment spot remains uncertain. It’s unknown what will become of the Shanty Bay Go-Karts and whether it will ever regain its former glory or be transformed into something new entirely.
